21

The second film I watched during the weekend was 21. This film is inspired by the true story of MIT students who had penetrated the biggest casinos in Las Vegas by counting cards. In three words, the movie is: clever, inspiring, great.

Some people are intelligent. But some people are smart. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is smart. He’s in his senior year in MIT, joins Science competitions, passes the exam and makes it to Harvard Med. But he’s struggling financially. Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey), his “Nonlinear Equations” professor sees his gift and recruits him to be a part of a team with fellow MIT students who have mastered the art of card counting and made killings in top Vegas casinos. At first, Ben doesn’t want to be involved in such acts. But Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben’s long-time crush, is also a part of the team and she convinces him to join. Plus Ben needs $300,000 for Harvard Med. Soon he finds himself counting cards… and counting money. He also finally gets his dream girl. But Ben’s losing friends as well, he lies to his mom..

21, story-wise, is really good. The unexpected twists and turns are strategically placed in different parts of the story, making you hang on to your seat. The characters are amazing, very distinct. And the actors gave justice to them.

But what’s special about 21 is its lesson. Money is important. Money is a necessity. Money is a big part of life. Money is everything in Vegas. But the world is bigger than Las Vegas. Cliché as it may sound, love, friends, and family are still more important. And if you’re street-smart like Ben Campbell, you don’t need to count cards to make money
